2002 Yamaha GP1200R
2005 Mods and Madness

Appearance....
The color was taken from a friend of mine's 55 chevy resto-mod.
Jimmy J's Resto Mod, using B-95-P Honda electron blue pearl
The side cowls were painted a spray can black. The decals are from Exotic-Signs. Check out the late nineties IJSBA sticker. The hood decals honoring my fallen friend Mark Hahn was provided by Rude Dawg. The gas cap is a Yamaha Billet anodized blue.

Riva Carbon Fiber Hood assembly.

After buying a SeaDoo RXpig, I have been totally spoiled by it's INCREDIBLE acceleration. Nothing I've done to date can match the thrill of the RXP coming out of the hole so HARD that you fight to hold on... I want my GPR to leave this hard, and will do anything to get it that way.

Goal:
Acceleration of an RXP/STXR
Glass water speed of 80.
Race condition speed of 70.
Great Looks

Currently:
70 mph/ 8200 rpm's in race trim.
81mph/8200rpms in smooth water trim

TBD:
Appearance: 98 Honda Electron Blue Paint, with Black top deck. Yamaha White internal hull.
Intake changes: 48 Novi with Boost Bottle
Reeds: Double RPM spacer to get reeds out of transfer port.
Pump: Modified TJ single bar intake with lowered shoe floor.

Flywheel/Snout Lapping and Radius...
Took the crankshaft and flywheel down to Crank Works and showed Phil what I read should be done to prevent flywheel chatter and breaking of the snout. After much discussion, he radiused the from of the flywheel to the snout area, and I used his porting bench and some grinding compound to lap the flywheel per instructions found on the Riva board. I also used RED lock-tite between the two items and torqued it down to 100ft/lbs. Your mileage may vary. There is hope... a new crankshaft design is on the way...

Crankshaft Support...

After talking to Larry and Mark down at RPM, I decided to spend the cash and put on the crankshaft support. In the middle picture, you can see the bearing support that takes the majority of the abuse. It will need to be changed out every 30 hours or so. I'm at 32 with no deflection. I'll change it at 40 regardless.

Cooling...
RPM Case cooling. Nozzle was drilled/tapped with a 1/8" npt 3/8 elbow barb, and using the old siphon hole in the transom, routed to the RPM  radiator, then out the front using a 90 degree bypass up front. I'm using a 14 vein pump with R/D Triple 1/2" cooling lines, plumbed to the Factory Pipe triple pipe flanges with 1/4" npt 1/2" elbow barbs. Also the flange gaskets have been opened up to cool the cylinders better. The 1/8" npt 3/8" elbow barbs are used for the pipe chambers, using about 2 foot of dual layer neoprene/ethelyne re-inforced yellow hose per pipe. Pipe jetting is stock. 7 total water bypass, plus using three dumps into the stock water outlet next to the pump. The pissers are 90 degree anodized blue.

Gauges, Electrical...
Parts: Advent ignition, Triple Pump gas curve, Rev Limit 7500,  Riva Battery Relocated to rear of hull. Using the old battery compartment for storage. Hot Tach 3 temp EGA gauge, with Factory Pipe flanges drilled for sensors.

Handling...
Parts: Carbon Fiber Sponsons, and stock ride plate cut to fit the Riva  Mechanical Trim Tabs. R&D Aquavien Pro 2 shoe and grate cut by TJ. Yamaha 3 degree XLT pump wedge, and R&D auto-drop rec. nozzle with Riva mechanical trim tabs. The mechanical tabs allow you to grab a handful of smooth water, whenever you need it! Currently running a 14 vein Skat pump, with Skat prop. No test data at this time.

Ergonomics:
Seat: The selection for seating is limited to the stock seat, a few very unfriendly carbon fiber models, and the CF models are upwards of $600. The GP13R seat weighs around 15 lbs., whereas the GP12R weighs around 25 lbs.!!! This is an incredible cost/weight savings. Sometimes you can find them on E-bay. Part number is F1G-U371A-00-00. I got mine for $200 shipped. Interestingly, the color matches the 02 better than the 02 seat. The size is about the same, but "feels" a little narrower, and is just as comfortable.

Seat Cover:The seat cover is a "mid-slip" all black Hydro-Turf. It was installed using SST staples at an upholstery shop in Mesa, called "Cover All."

Grips: The grips are my all-time favorite. They are ODI's using a variation of the "rouge" pattern. You can find them at the bicycle shop for about $15. They take 5 minutes to install, but use no glue, and will not come off... unless you loosen the clamps. These are a name brand called "Lizard Skins." The mech trim tab lever is a generic motorcycle shop brand offroad motorcycle break lever. The throttle is stock Yamaha... one of the best ones ever made.

Foot Wells: The foot pads are industry standard Hydro-Turf. The side lifter wedges are made from Hydro-turf covering HT side lifter wedges... installed on the outside only.

Splash Guard: The splash guard was provided by Riva Racing.
